Updating Pinboards

When we first moved to Berlin, I made the boys a pinboard each to collect pins of all the different places we visited while we were in Europe. After 6 years, the pinboards had been totally full. I added an extra panel to the boys pinboards to keep adding pins to. They went through the quilting fabric and chose the colours they wanted.

I have been meaning to make myself a board as well, for my breast cancer, quilting and knitting pins. I finally got around to it, and stuck all my pins on it. I really like it!

Felted Baskets

Inspired by a gorgeos grey felted bowl by Domestic Aesthetic , I thought I could try the same type of thing with a large piece of felted knitting that i had made years ago. This piece of fabric I had felted to make a needle roll for my knitting needles, but once it was felted it was way too thick, so it has been sitting in the "no idea" box for quite some time. So, I finally cut up the fabric to make these 2 felted bowls. I love them, and they are a great size for me to keep the current knitting project together beside my chair! I searched through my odd button collection for suitable buttons, and sewed them on using DMC cottons.

A simple strippy table runner in green tones. A good start, but it doesn't even look like I have taken any strips from the box...this is going to be an interesting challenge!

Part of my New Year's Resolutions, (yes there is more than 1), is to make a table runner each week. Why a table runner? Well, we are living in a small house at the moment, and I do not have the space to create larger quilts. So, I think at least with table runners I am creating, I can play with different patterns, and use up the stash. Here is the first one, a simple 4 patch on point.

Bandana

Not very exciting I know, but I am using up the stash this year, and it has been a warm start to the year, and I need a haircut. In the meantime, I just made this bandana to get the hair off my face. This is a great way to use up some of that special fabric I can't bear to part with, but will look good on my head. I have also worn this bandana while out running, and it was great at keeping the hair from my face, so I may make a few more. Fergus approves!

I had hoped to knit something for the kid's teachers for a Christmas present, but as the school fair took up most of my September - Dec, there was little time to be knitting 2 gifts as well, so I decided to make a few tablerunners, as I can do this a lot quicker than knitting. This is a patttern I have used quite a few times. After a lot of searching, here is the original pattern Now I just look at previous pictures of the ones I have made, and work from them.

Love this baby cardigan, made for my neice who is due to have a baby in April 2012. I saw it in Ravelry ages ago, but didn't have anyone to knit it for. So, I jumped on the chance when I found out my neice was pregnant.
It's a jedi cardigan, so it has to be in grey (or brown), I don't think it matters if the baby is a boy or a girl to wear grey! I was never a big fan of pink for girls, blue for boys. The writing on the inside was used after I saw Fabienne's sweater and thought it was the best thing ever!!

I am really enjoying spinning on my Barry, Majacraft Little Gem wheel. I am really please with the thickness (or some would say the thinness) and the consistency of my yarn.

Our spinning and weaving group meet once a month, and I really enjoy attending and meeting like minded people. The local council had a "hertitage week", and invited us to set up a display and "learn how to" in the council offices one day. So a few of us took our wheels and fibre and set up a display of our work. We had a few interested ladies wanting to have a turn. It wasn't a big turn out, but the bonus was that I got to spin more of this yellow fibre and finish the 100grams later that week.

mmm…undecided about this one.. I don’t think it suits my body shape. I like it with the dark green stripes closer to the neck than the other way…but not convinced. This may get frogged into something else. I will wait till next Winter and see how I go wearing it. The sleeves are a little bit long, but this maybe a blessing in the Winter months.

My first spun wool that I spun during the Beginners Spinners Class with Donna. I was so pleased with it. It sat for awhile, as I was not sure what to do with it, and I just liked fondling it, it was so awesome, and I can tell you I was so impressed with my skill! lol. Fergus enjoyed it as well!

But then I Kim gifted me a gorgeous pattern I had been eying off for quite sometime, and knew this was exactly what I wanted to knit with my first handspun wool. Ishbel, by Ysolda Teague.

I am so thrilled with this shawl. Technically my first fully lace pattern I have ever attempted.
The nupps drove me crazy, but the end product was so worth it!

Brass and Steam shawl

Opps, very late in posting this one, I had forgotten all about it. So backdating this one.This is the second project from my Spinners Course at the Spinners and Handweavers Guild.

This wool is spun in fleece straight from the sheep, and then dyed.

The pattern is inspired after Alexander's investigation of what steampunk is. Then we did a Ravelry search for steampunk, and came up with this shawl, which I love. It's called "The Age of Brass and Steel, by Orange Flower. A free download pattern on Ravelry.

the green and yellows in this shawl are pretty bright, but I like it like that! :)

Amsterdam Annis

Using the wool I bought in Amsterdam in yellow to remind me of our holiday there. I tried to get wool made in Holland, but there wasn’t any. So I ended up with this yellow from Peru.

The lace work will remind me of Rembrandt’s paintings, and the lace work painted in portrait work.

The yellow reminds me of the Vermeer and Van Gogh’s paintings I got to see in real life, not just out of art text books.

The yellow is not as vibrant as I would have lliked, but the yarn store didn’t have much of a selection in yellow..this muted yellow will probably suit me better anyway!

First hand spun project, Alice Handwarmers

For the past few months I have been learning to spin at the Handweaver and Spinners Guild of Victoria with my friend Donna. We have been having a great time, and learning a lot!
Here is a pair of handwarmers from the very first wool I have handspun, and then hand dyed.

Needles: 5mm, and knit in the round. I ran out of the dyed wool just before the end, so I added a little bit of natural handspun wool. Nice and warm.

Now we have the spinning bug, we went to the Bendigo wool show and I bought a Majacraft Little Gem Wheel. It is fantastic, and I am really happy with it!

Using some felting stash and 6.5mm needles, I played around with making a crown to watch the royal wedding. Finished it off with a picot edge, and a few beads.

We had a cake

We got together at Kelly's place.

I even won the engagement ring in pass the parcel.

Of course, you can't watch the Royal Wedding without a glass (or 6) of Pimms!

It was all very civilised!

I modified the pattern to knit it in one piece. (one piece patterns are the best, no sewing up needed!)

Picked up the boutique and beauty wool at the op shop at Mont Albert. 6 balls for less that $10.00. not enough for a complete vest, so adding in some of my Fibreworks boucle to make up the extra.

A simple vest that I can wear around the house when I want to keep my body warm, but don’t want bulky sleeves!

Still using up left over Rico Baby Wool. It seems to be breeding in my wool basket, it just doesn't seem to ever run out!

Using double wool, I knit these 2 beanies for Alexander and Cameron for school. for some reason, Alexander's red hat has ended up pointy, and Cameron's is round. They both like their hats, so I am not frogging Alexander's. they will be great on cold Winter mornings when they go to school.

When I got my Rowan subscription a few years ago, my free gift was 6 balls of Rowan Denim yarn and a pattern for a bag.

Blue...the only thing in my wardrobe that is blue is my jeans, so I was never going to make the cute little bag that came with the wool. But, market bags were not out of the question.

A really simple bag to knit, but it is a bit narrow. So I think it is better for spring onions, bread, celery, and other long things.

I love the woven stitch for the base of this bag, and the double handles.
Next time I make it I would make the lace pattern only about 9"..it stretches a lot!

This is my favourite bag of all of them.
I love the circular base and the stitch is easy to knit up....I may adapt this bag with the handles of the Montavilla Bag for my next Market bag.

Wanting to really work hard at recycling, and using what I have, I was inspired by the Mason-Dixon Knitting book (borrowed from the library), about dishcloths.
I am hoping to be able to use these until they are well worn, then cut them up and put into the compost heap or worm farm. (Not sure which option is better at this stage)

These are so not my colours, but the only colours available at Spotlight at the time when I wanted cotton “right now”

If these work well, I will try and source brighter colours to use next time.
I can knit one up in an evening watching some rubbish on TV…..now I am ready to try some different patterns (only first I must knit a few more until I use up all the cotton yarn from these 4 balls.
I am trying so hard not to end up with small left overs of anything!

The leftover ends of yarn that I am not using get rolled up into a ball...when the ball is big enough I will throw it in the washing machine with the next load of towels or bedding to felt...they make great balls for Eros the cat to play with (I just have to send it in a postpack to England)

So they have been put on hold until I knit some more socks and have left over wool.

Starbucks Knit Group Farewell!

It was with great sadness that I attended my last Berlin Knit meet up on a Friday.

I will miss you all, and hope that we will be able to meet up again in the near future, whether that is in Berlin, or hopefully you will come and visit me in Melbourne, Australia.

My wonderful friends surprised me with an adorable present, a game of memory, so I won't forget them, and our fun Friday's together! There are 2 of each card! You all made me teary! I love them and look at them often!

Made for Mrs Keil, our school administrator who has put up with endless stupid requestes and questions from me for the past 6 years.

This scarf should have been finished before the kids finished school, however the weather turned against me, and was +30 every day for 2 weeks...not great knitting weather when you do not have air conditioning or fans in the 3rd and 4th floor of our apartment!

So, the week before school started again, I managed to give this to Mrs Keil, hopefully she will get lots of waer out of this in the cool Autumns and freezing Winter months ahead....I think it will look fabulous with her gorgeous hair!

Trail Handwarmers

Pattern: made up.
Wool: Zwerger Garn Opal Hundertwasser.
Needles: 2.5mm

An attempt at hand warmers, just to see how they work.

Cast on 60 stitches, knit 4, purl 1, and keep going.

Once you get to where you want to start your thumbs, go back and forth, to make an opening large enough for your thumb, then start knitting in the round again.

A bit small for my hands, so I gave them to Antje.

Hopefully they will keep her hands warm in the Berlin Winter

This one has been done for awhile as well, but it had to wait to be shown as it is a gift for Cameron's teacher, Mr Shillitoe. It is made from the same wool as his scarf that we gave him for Christmas. Not to be worn at the moment in 35+ degrees, but the weather in Berlin will start to cool down soon.

This wimple is a gift for Miss Beves, Alexander's teacher. It's been finished for awhile, but had to hold on to it until the gift was given.

Slow Progress

Lots of things happening outside my crafty endeavours at the moment...so much going on, that doing anything that rquires too much pattern reading or charts has had to be put aside for the time being. At least until the end of May, then things will hopefully pick up again.

In the meantime, I have been working through the stash of left over sock wool and working on my 2 blankets. These are now almost too big to take on the train and bus (well I could, but they won't fit into my handbag anymore, so they need a bag of their own now. Still they grow, and I am amazed at home big these blankets are getting, even though lots of this wool is left over from previous projects.

We have been watching the series of Underbelly 2, and now we are watching a BBC series called Hustle, which requires a lot of actual watching of the TV, otherwise you miss out on the fine details of the scam. It's a great show to watch in the evenings when the kids have gone to bed. The blankets are slowly increasing, although they are taking longer to do each row.

Icelandic Knitting Fever and progress on 1 Sock Blanket

During our trip around Iceland I was amazed at how many shops stocked knitting wool. I couldn't resist buying enough wool for a cardigan, and a great pattern. I will just have to learn a bit of Icelandic to read the pattern....

KnitPick needles are the chosen weapon of Icelandic, and you can buy then where ever you buy wool. Remarkably, they were a reasonable price in Iceland, cheaper than I can get in Germany, and I got a tax refund at the airport on the way out.

While I was in the shop choosing a pattern Cameron had the camera. So here a few of the appropriate photos he took. This is some of the colours of the Lopi wool.

We found this pattern for a horse jumper. It gets cold in Iceland! However I am not knitting anyone a jumper for their horse!!

I also bought wool for mittens as well, the patterns we saw in the stores were fantastic. A lovely lady in one of the wool stores gave me this link to Istex, and this pattern will find its way onto my needles in the very near future as well.

I see on the website, the pattern book I bought comes in English....but where is the fun in that??? The breadth of my Icelandic is Takk and Bless Bless...so I have a lot of work to do!

Meanwhile, I have been using up left over sock wool to increase the size of this sock wool blanket. We have been watching a DVD series called Dead Like Me (sorry it is a Wiki page, but it gives you a good run down on the show). This show has been hilarious to watch and this blanket is easy knitting while we laugh!

I am amazed at how these little balls of left over sock wool are making these 2 sock blankets! There is a triangle version of a shawl, by the same lady, and I think I will try that as well at some stage, maybe with left over 8ply or something??

So, in the meantime, I will finish the 2 cardigans on the needles, add to the sock wool blankets, study write as essay and then learn some Icelandic!

The PTA at the kid's school have bought 6 sewing machines for the kids to learn how to sew.

One of the teachers is doing an after school club. I am there to pick the kids up that day as the boys have clubs, so I have offered to help if she needed it.

She asked me for any ideas for the kids to make things that they would enjoy, so I have been thinking about different things, and checking with Alexander and Cameron to see of they would enjoy making and using the projects.

I remember having a book cover like this when I was younger. I can't remember where it came from, but I remember the fabric was batik greens and blacks, and I loved it. So, I have tried to replicate it from memory.

As I attempted to make one of my own, I took photos of each stage. Alexander is a wizz at Power Point Presentations, so he did the slides for me. The classroom has an interactive white board, so we can put the slides up on there for everyone to see.

I sent my friend Steph, (a new addicted sewing fan), the file, and she made 3 in 1 1/2 hours, and was really pleased with the results.

The measurements for a book I covered was 13cm wide, 20cm high and 2 1/2cm thick. When I went through the kids bookshelves this was the standard size of most of their books. If you want to cover a different size book, measuure the width (double it for front and back), height and spine, and add seam allowances. For the inner flaps, measure width of cover and subtract 3cm from width.

1. It was wider and longer than the kids scarves (ttok longer to make)
2. I was bored of the pattern 1/2 way though, and got sidetracked with my citron, handschuhe, and my doublemassa hat!

Knitting Bags

I run a knitting club at school every Tuesday. The kids knitting are in a box, and every week it is a bit of a mess when they try and find their knitting.
We have tried putting their knitting in plastic pockets, and labels on knitting needles, and still they can't find their knitting quickly.

So, I have made these little knitting bags with a drawstring. Each bag is made from different novelty fabric.
The kids chose which bag they wanted, and now their knitting is kept safe.....well, we will see what happens next week!

I love this hat!

Pity I didn't start this one before Xmas for those -15 degree days.
This hat is fully lined, so when the cuff is turned over, it has 4 layers..really warm.

Now that the snow has melted, and the tempreture is over 5 degrees..I am not sure when I will wear this hat, but it won't stop me making another one!

Every last Friday of the month I meet up with a group of Berlin knitters at Starbucks and we spend a few hours talking and knitting together.

Our conversatons swap from English to German, and sometimes French and Italian if we have visitors from other countries join us. We all met through Ravelry, a fantastic online knitting community.

Some of us decided to go on a trip to Pfaffenhofen, Bayern, in South Germany to visit the Wollmeise.

Our 6 hour train trip meant there was lots of knitting done and the time went fast.

We had booked an apartment for us all, and it was a lovely place with a bedroom for each of us.

On Friday we had a "typische Deutsche Frühstück" with Suzan a fellow Raveller, and fantastic knitter,

After breakfast we drove to the Wollmeise Shop..

Shelves of "Not Quite Perfect" Skeins

I was overhwhelmed with the choices of colour....so for awhile I just sat on the sofa and knitted and looked and thought about the colours I wanted to buy, and what I would do with the wool I would purchase. I had a few ideas for some lacy tops, shawls and socks. Then I picked out colours, sat them on a sofa for awhile to look at them, before I bought the ones I wanted.

While we were buying our wool, we were able to sit on the sofa's in the shop, talk to other knitters and knit all afternoon. It was fantastic!

The wall of the toilet was fun to read, expecially when you see familiar Raveller names who have visited before.

Waiting for the train...10 minutes, sure, time to knit a few more rows!

Saturday we went back to the shop and bought a little bit more, and met some other Ravellers and knitted the afternoon away.
Julie can't decide which colours she wants, while Suzan sits and knits, she can come here anytime, she lives so close to the shop. ;)

Sunday we had to come back to Berlin, it was a bit of a tight squeeze for some of us to put all the wool in our bags, but we all managed. Then it was another 6 hour trip on the train back to Berlin, where I worked on a pair of socks.

On our way home, Julie couldn't resist starting a new pair of socks for a friend with her new wool

It was a fantastic girly weekend. I really enjoyed myself, got to know 3 knitters a lot better, a lot of laughs and fun to be had. I am so glad I went!

I am also back at Uni this year, so I may be as prolific this year, but I hope to work through the UFO list that I wrote out at the begining of the year, and not buy new supplies.

Berlin Knitters

Through Ravelry I have met some other obsessed knitters, and there are plenty of opportunities to get together.

Most of these are in the evenings or over the weekend which is near impossible for me to manage, so I suggested a morning/lunch meeting on the last Friday of the month! A few people said they were interested, and our Last Friday of the Month get together was born.

This group saved my sanity here in Berlin, I can sit with other obsessed crafters and talk about the stuff I love to do. So, here we are....

We meet at an American Coffee Shop with big comfy chairs and chat, knit and then frog when we make a mistake! Today I remembered to take my camera.

Danish Wool

I was thrilled to find a wool shop in Hirtshals open on the north coast of Denmark.

The owner of the shop was very charming, and helped me with the Danish wool. She spoke very good English.

I bought these 2 balls of wool. She explained how the vest that was modelled on the mannequin was made from the same wool, and the pattern came free with the purchase of the wool....the only problem...the pattern was in Danish.

Who am I kidding....I have enough trouble with the German language. But I took the pattern anyway, and I am determined to give this pattern a go...it's a gorgeous vest!

I will have to find a nice Denmark Knitter in Ravelry to help with the pattern....that won't be hard!

I think I can at least start it by myself...I can work out which needles to use, which size and how many stitches to cast on...so that's a start!

I have been knitting.....

These hats are simple to knit up, but serve a sad purpose. We have 3 friends going through, or about to go through chemo treatment.

There isn't much we can do to help from here, but I can at least knit up these hats to send to them as the weather gets colder here.

Scrapbooking, is something I have been meaning to do for a long time. I want to get the photos I have taken into some sort of order and make them easier to look at, and cull them down a bit.

I have been buying bits and pieces for many years, and this week I actually got a couple of pages done.

Some of my scrapping friends and I are doing a challenge by using the same layout each month. This is what I came up with for my October challenge.

Osnabrück Nadel und Faden Fair

I went to Osnabrück for the craft fair again this year.

I love Osnabrück, this is the second time I have been there, and it is so peaceful (on reflection maybe it is so peaceful, because I am by myself).

I had a great couple of days at the craft fair, and enjoyed looking around and talking to other crafty people!

I bought some gorgeous fabrics and yarn for some future projects. There were some interesting quilts on display, mainly art quilts for wall hangings.

Osnabrück is a town that had a large wall around it (some of it still exists). The cobbled streets and building are lovely to wander around.

After the craft show, I went into town to have a look around and get something to eat. All along the footpaths, people were sitting on garden/outdoor chairs. I was a bit confused by it all, but thought perhaps later on there was going to be a concert or something.

I went back to the hotel, and after 9pm, I went back out to see what was happening.

An enormous Trödelmarkt. Flea/Second hand market. The Trödelmarkt was an all night, family friendly event. Start at 9pm, and went all through Saturday night and all day Sunday.

People were claiming their places during the day with their seats, but they were not allowed to bring their tables and stuff to sell until after 8.30pm.

So, no concert. Howver it was interesting to see what people were selling and what other people were buying. There were 2 spinning wheels that perhaps I would have looked at a bit closer, if I didn't have to carry it on a train back to Berlin.

The "die hard" buyers had their torches, as it got dark they would use the torches to look over the tables to make sure they didn't miss any bargains!

I bought some beads at the Melbourne Quilt Show, and I made some bracelets when I was in Melbourne. Then I went to Harmony Beads in North Balywn (opposite Coles on that scary corner with the trams and 5 roads all joining together), to match up smaller beads with the larger beads that I had bought!

These ones were done with a clover "knitting nancy"..I don't know the correct name for it. They were fun to make, and I have bought some more beading wire is different colours to try, and also some different clasps.

Oak Ribbed Socks

A 6 week break in Oz, and I managed to get a few things done (but not too much)
This pair of socks was a simple project that I could work on without needing to look at a pattern very often!

The pattern is by Nancy Bush, from Knitting Vintage Socks Book

No idea...but I am hoping that by the end of the year, the box of tumbler pieces will be finished....and I have found a super cool pattern to work with 2" strips that I want to tackle next year...stay tuned!

Cameron's Blue Churn Dash.

Cameron's favourite colours have always been green and yellow, but he has now changed to blue. So this one had to be altered from my original plan.

He is thrilled with it!

Still there are plenty of black and white fabrics, probably for another 2-3 quilts! They will have to wait...I have another couple of tumbler block quilts on the go (again)

Alexander's Red Churn Dash.
I have been collecting these black and white fabrics for about 10 years, and finally had enough variety to make these (also the green churn dash back in Feb/March - see previous post for that one)

Red is Alexander's favourite colour, so this is perfect for him!

June Xmas Ornie

The June Ornament for our stitch along with our internet group.

The design is called Merry and Bright by Little By Little Design Co.

I am trying to use smaller pieces of aida cloth for these ornaments. I am not sure how I will finish this one, but the hearts on the edges will not be seen.
